Bird Symbolizes Freedom
Woodcarving creations in concentration camps
Wood carvings of eight different Japanese-American prisoners are displayed here.Obviously these pieces have similar layouts and graphic designs. Because the pieces come from several different students who have the same woodcarving instructor.
Yutaka Suzuki was born in Japan and immigrated to the United States. After the outbreak of World War II he was imprisoned in the Granada(Amache)concentration camp There he be came a woodcarving instructor.I think these woodcarving students chose to carve birds because birds represent the longing for freedom. After the war these wood carvings were scattered with creators, but put them together to remind us not to forget the wrong history.
This work is a secondary creation of these woodcarvings made in concentration camps. I recombine the parts from different wood carvings into a new picture. Different branches and different birds come from different wood carvings. Reunited in this way to honor history. In addition, I added the Japanese Chinese calligraphy "flying" to emphasize that these arts come from Japanese culture. "Flying" echoes with birds, expressing the woodcarving creators' desire for freedom.

I like to combine traditional style and emphasize user experience in design, and pay attention to humanistic care in the design of transportation tools. I chose to participate in this project because I want to discover history from another perspective, and try to find references to reality and the future from history.
